When your well is dry…
I just finished breakfast with my best friend, Ron. We always have great conversations, Ron and me – but this time it went to a new level….or maybe I should say…a new depth. Ron began to recount again the time in his life after his father’s death when he realized that his “well was completely dry.” He said that his friend Rick Tobias gave him the best advice he’d ever heard. Rick told him this…“When your well is empty, don’t just fill it with water, dig it deeper.”
Wow! Now that is deep advice! Do you you get it? Think about it as you read it again….“When your well is empty, don’t just fill it with water, dig it deeper.” If you fill your well with water, you’re depending on external sources, external circumstances, someone else, something else to happen or something to stop happening. But if you dig your well deeper, you will hit a new water source that will well up from within you…filling your well from the other direction. This way, your joy, your contentment and your happiness come from within and allow you to difuse it into the world around you….instead of drawing it from the world around you. That begins to change everything.
We are SO programmed to first look to externals for help and I definitely include myself here. However, I am slowly learning that the Divine Presence, the Eternal One is residing within me and that I can tap into the depth of this Presence any time I want during the day, at any moment during the day, in fact, that is the ONLY time…the present moment. I can’t bank it up or depend on past reserves for the future….but the well is always there. It’s a question of finding the way there, and remembering the path back. The more it is visited, the clearer and shorter the path becomes.
