This Summer Practice This
Summer is coming up.*** Yeah! Hopefully you’ll be able to take some vacation time. That probably means you’ll be at the lake, or the river, or the ocean, or the mountains, or the forest, or some international tourist site……..where ever you go…..try this….no…..practice this:
- Enjoy the moment. Don’t forget when you get there, to let everything else fall away. Forget your past struggles and ignore your future challenges. As you sit there amidst the beauty, express your gratitude. Take a few moments to say out loud to yourself…..”I’m grateful for this cool breeze.” or “Beautiful trees, I wish to thank you, You’re magnificent!” or “The rhythm of these waves are soothing to me….to them I want to say, thanks.”
- Include others. If expressing thanks for the beauty around you is meaningful to you, think about throwing out the idea to your partner, your kids or others that are with you. “Hey, in all this beauty around us, what part of it are you most thankful for?”
- Go deeper. You may find yourself attracted to one particular aspect of nature: flowers, trees, water, etc. With a pad and pen and some free time… jot down what comes to mind as you focus on this one thing. Ask yourself questions like: Why do I like this? Why I’m I drawn to it? What does it have in common with me? What can I learn from it? If we could have a conversation, what would it tell me? What would I like to tell it?
- Apply your art. While you are being inspired by beauty, allow it to engage you on an even deeper level by allowing it to touch your soul through art: Take photos, draw sketches, write poetry, compose music….. But to do this, take it beyond the technical aspect of your art….inter into dialog with it….allow it to speak to you…..learn from it…..taste it….
***If you live in the southern hemisphere…come back to this post in 6 months. 🙂
